Hand-Knotted Wool Bokhara Rug, Turkish, Circa Late 20th Century

Dimensions: 46" W × 73" L

This is a striking example of the Bokhara weaving tradition in an uncommonly beautiful cobalt blue — a field color that immediately sets it apart from the far more common red-ground examples. The central field is adorned with rows of guls, the tribal crests that are the defining signature of the Bokhara tradition, each one a geometric octagonal medallion with intricate interior patterning. Here, those guls appear in warm amber and burnt orange tones against the deep navy field, creating a jewel-like contrast that is genuinely eye-catching. These octagonal motifs are also known as "elephant's foot" guls, and the characteristic windowpane effect — where the guls appear visually connected across the field — gives the composition its satisfying sense of rhythm and order.

The Bokhara design originated with the Turkmen tribal traditions of Central Asia, with the city of Bukhara serving as the great trading hub through which these rugs reached Western markets. Turkish-made Bokharas like this one carry that same design vocabulary while reflecting the weaving strengths of Anatolia. Bokhara rug weavers predominantly employ the Ghordies knot — also known as the Turkish or symmetrical knot — a technique that provides added strength and resilience and contributes to the exceptional durability and longevity of these rugs. The multiple-border system framing the field is well-executed, with geometric filler motifs stepping down in scale toward the center in the traditional manner, and the natural fringe at both ends is intact and even.

Turkish Bokharas can be found in a range of colors including light and dark blue, with a higher pile and softer wool than their Afghan or Central Asian counterparts. This cobalt ground example delivers exactly that: a plush, warm handle with good pile height and vibrant color saturation that photographs beautifully and reads equally well in person.
