Gmundner Keramik Hand-Painted "Green Deer" (Hirsch) Earthenware Vase, Circa Mid-to-Late 20th Century

Dimensions: 4.75" H × 3" diameter

The ceramics manufactory at Gmunden on Lake Traunsee was first documented in 1492 — the same year Columbus sailed west — and has been producing hand-painted earthenware in Austria's Salzkammergut ever since. This compact vase carries one of the manufactory's most beloved and enduring decorative motifs: the leaping stag, rendered in the brand's characteristic palette of forest green, warm ochre, and russet brown against a bright white ground. The "Green Deer" (Hirsch) pattern is one of Gmundner's classic named designs, and seeing it on a piece this small — a rounded, pitcher-form vase with a gently pinched lip — only emphasizes how much detail the painters packed into every surface. The stag leaps mid-stride above a stylized alpine landscape, framed by the lattice and botanical border that wraps the footing. It is a little snapshot of the Austrian countryside, made permanent in glaze.

Each Gmundner piece passes through the hands of ceramic specialists up to sixty times before leaving the factory, and the professional painters execute their designs brushstroke by brushstroke with a precision that requires skill, steadiness, and genuine love of the work. The bottom of this vase bears the distinctive Gmundner Keramik factory mark — the square logo with the "GK" monogram — confirming its Austrian manufacture and authenticity. Half of all Austrian households own at least one piece of Gmundner Keramik, which tells you something about the hold this manufactory has on its national identity. For collectors outside Austria, that same everydayness is exactly what makes it special: this is living folk art, not a tourist trinket.
