Henkel-Harris "Virginia Galleries" Federal Hepplewhite Mahogany Serpentine Sideboard, 1994
Dimensions: 38.5" H × 56" W × 23" D
The maker's mark burned into the drawer bottom says everything a serious buyer needs to know: Henkel-Harris, Winchester, Virginia, 1994. Operating out of Winchester, Virginia, Henkel Harris is recognized as a leader of the fine furniture industry, known for producing the highest quality furniture with the utmost care and passion for detail. This sideboard is a textbook example of what that reputation is built on.
The serpentine front features swirly figured mahogany veneer with decorative inlays of maple and a hand-applied bead on the doors and drawers, tapered legs with line inlays and a prima vera cuff, and locking doors and drawers with a silver liner in the top drawer. The flame mahogany veneer on the drawer faces and door panels catches the light with the kind of depth that only genuinely figured wood produces — no two panels are identical, and the grain patterns shift and shimmer as you move around the piece. The inlay work is precise and restrained, running in fine stripes along the drawer borders and down the tapered legs in the classic Federal manner.
The brass hardware deserves its own close look. The oval brasses are replicas of original American hardware, depicting an eagle with 13 stars — a design that would date the original inspiration to 1790–91, the early years of the Republic. It is a quietly patriotic detail, executed with the kind of care that only a manufacturer deeply invested in historical accuracy would bother with. The two central drawers are flanked by a pair of cabinet doors, each enclosing full storage compartments — a practical layout that remains one of the most functional dining room storage configurations ever designed.
Style: American Federal / Hepplewhite
Maker: Henkel-Harris Company, Winchester, Virginia — Virginia Galleries Collection, 1994
Materials: Solid mahogany top, swirly figured mahogany veneer, maple and obeche inlay, prima vera leg cuffs; brass eagle hardware; secondary woods (oak drawer construction as evidenced by the branded label)
Price Note: The Henkel-Harris suggested retail on a comparable Federal mahogany sideboard of this size is $7,725 new. At $3,255, this is a serious piece of American furniture at less than half of what it would cost to order new — assuming you could still find one, as Henkel-Harris production is no longer active at the scale it once was. For buyers who understand what they're looking at, the value here is exceptional.
