Harden Furniture Mahogany Queen Anne Style Wing Chair, Circa Late 20th Century

Dimensions: H. 44 in. × W. 35 in. × D. 26 in.

This is a well-made Queen Anne style wing chair by Harden Furniture, the venerable McConnellsville, New York firm founded in 1844 and long regarded as one of America's finest traditional furniture makers. Harden studied the masters relentlessly, and their 18th-century adaptations were the company's genuine strong suit — with gooseneck arms on elegant chairs mimicking English classics like the Queen Anne style. This example bears that out. The chair carries the full complement of Queen Anne hallmarks: a high arched back flanked by generous wings, and front cabriole legs with carved knees terminating in pad feet. The mahogany frame has the warm, rich tone consistent with Harden's meticulous finishing standards.

The arms deserve particular attention. Rather than the simplified rolled arm seen on most 20th-century reproductions, these arms curve outward with a scroll and fullness that echo the true 18th-century originals — the genuine Queen Anne wing chair having rolled-out arms with cones set on cabriole legs ending in pad feet is exactly what Harden was working to replicate, and the arms on this example reflect that ambition. It was during the Queen Anne era that wing-back armchairs became increasingly popular, with furniture of this period being smaller, lighter, and more comfortable than its predecessors — a quality that the best reproductions have worked to preserve.

The chair is upholstered in a flame-stitch or bargello-patterned fabric in blush pink, ivory, and pale sage — a woven zigzag pattern with historical roots that pairs naturally with 18th-century revival forms and was a popular choice for this style of chair through the 1970s and 1980s. Harden was known for making incredible solid wood upholstered furniture with great frames, and a vintage Harden wingback chair in good condition is well worth the investment.

Harden furniture pieces have been placed in fine homes, and the company was even commissioned to produce furniture for the White House. Their upholstered pieces were never inexpensive new, and well-preserved examples continue to hold real value on the secondary market.
