Every year, Pantone releases it’s color of the year. This color influences so many creative ideas – furniture design, fashion, paint colors, eyewear – the list is endless.

Today, we thought we’d share a few of our favorite marsala-hued picks from the store and our favorite marsala inspirations from Pinterest, as well as a look back at Pantone’s previous colors of the year.

Let’s get started – first off, here is Pantone’s color of 2015 – marsala.

This warm, wine-inspired shade is versatile and we would say one of the more classic shades chosen in recent years. It is bold, while still maintaining a refined look and feel.

Here are a few of our favorite marsala picks from the shop, all of them are available this week.

This shade of red offers a lot of tones to work with – purples, browns and it blends well with existing decor in many different styles.

Here are a few of our favorite Pinterest-inspired ways to use marsala in your home.

1. Paint a wall! These paint colors are perfect matches to marsala.

2. Use a statement piece! Adding a sofa or larger piece of furniture in a marsala is a great way to use this color.

3. Not ready to commit to a statement piece? Add a splash of the color with accessories!

And, now that we have smothered marsala with all of our love for the color (I’m sure you haven’t seen the end of it) we thought we’d take a moment to review Pantone’s previous colors of the year.

It’s safe to say that Pantone definitely starts trends with their color of the year selection. The emerald color from 2012 is still quite popular in fashion and home decor.

What do you think? Would you use Pantone’s color of the year in your home?

2015: Timeless Trends

By

Jan 7, 2015 , , , , , , , , , 0 Comments

With the beginning of a new year, we like to look forward and share our favorite home decor trends for that year. But, we try to approach it from a different angle, sharing trends that we feel are timeless. While there is a bit of irony in the words “timeless” and “trends” being used in the same sentence, we feel that trends can become timeless.

So, without further ado, here are our favorite trends for 2015 – that you can safely incorporate into your home decor trusting they won’t be out of style next year.

1. Mod Chairs + Old Farm Tables
What makes this trend timeless if the use of chic, well-made, most often hand crafted farm tables. Having been around since the first pilgrims made their way to this great country, this style isn’t going anywhere. Mixing mod chairs with worn farm tables updates the look and gives it a fresh, 2015 take on tradition.

2. Statement Light Fixtures
Less of a trend, more a resurgence, statement light fixtures are in. Especially in rooms that you may not typically put a statement light fixture in – say bathrooms and offices? We love it. Timeless. On trend. And the perfect excuse to use vintage pieces!

3. Four Poster Beds
The drama of these super stylish beds is back – and better than ever. We love the rich look of wood four poster beds, but also really enjoy the non-traditional – like birch branches.

4. Driftwood & Raw Wood Furniture & Finishes
Whether its fireplace mantles or dining tables, raw wood & driftwood pieces offer a versatile richness that 2015 is loving. It also adds a timeless, organic feeling to any room. Thumbs up from Evolution Home for this trend!

5. Pantone’s Color of the Year – Marsala
Oh boy, how much do we love this color? Let us count the ways. Firstly, its easy to find in many vintage pieces – making it super easy to mix-n-match old and new AND its got a timeless elegance to it. Bold, but not in your face. Here is an antique inspiration for you.

Black & White Home Decor

By

Jun 6, 2014 , , , , , , , 0 Comments

Black and white home decor is hot trend right now. Who can disagree? With clean lines and a tidy but luxe feel, it seems to solve almost all design and decorating conundrums (like color matching). It may not be for the faint of heart though, as what might seem like the humblest of colors can actually be quite bold when paired together. We suggest adding a pop of color to a black and white motif – it breaks up the stark contrast. Even something as small as fresh flowers can soften the look.

Another great element about decorating with black and white pieces – its easy to change up your look with just a few accessories. Switch out pillows, artwork, vases, etc and get a new look for each season.

Here are some of our favorite black and white room inspirations – maybe just start with your office or bedroom before you overhaul your whole home. Although, we see how it would be easy to do. Find more black and white inspirations on our Pinterest board!

We have black and white pieces in the shop this week – vintage, antique and new!

6 Spring Decor Trends

By

Mar 14, 2014 , , , , , , , , 0 Comments

It feels like we have been talking about our desire for Spring this year for so long here on this blog. Every week we hold on to the hope that it will show up with a little extra sunshine, an above 65 degree day – something! Anything! This winter sure has been a rough one and with more snow forecasted for this weekend, it doesn’t feel like it is moving anywhere anytime soon.

But – what is moving forward are the fab spring trends in home decor. Personally, we are ready to rip apart our houses and get to our spring cleaning – so we can refresh our spaces with some of the loveliest finds this spring has to offer. We always try to watch out for trends that are too “trendy”. We tend to stay away from a style or look that feels more fleeting than timeless. So, we compiled a list of six of our favorite home decor trends for spring that we think have staying power – or will look lovely in your home for seasons and years to come.

Here are our six favorite trends in home decor this season – in the photos below, our inventory is pictured on the LEFT and the photo on the right is a trend example from Pinterest.

1. Brightly Colored Upholstered Furniture
From leather to prints, bright is right. We love fearless home decor risk-takers that are willing to add a splash of color to a room with an unexpected bright, bold color. See our inventory on the left available in the shop, and our inspiration on the right.

2. Floral Prints
Le sigh…we love a floral print. On a piece of china, upholstery, drapes – you name it. Done right it brings a light and airy femininity to a space and is always oh-so-lovely.floraltrend

3. Painted Furniture
Now, we know we may turn some of you off with this one BUT hear us out. Painting furniture is a fabulous way to give it a fresh life – especially when it is damaged beyond repair or seriously dated. We aren’t running to paint our favorite antique pieces, but we love using a nice painted piece to add some life to a space.

4. Vintage Barware
Get ready to sip your way through spring. Vintage barware is back and being used everywhere from cocktail parties to weddings. With spring gardens being planted & farmer’s markets firing back up – this means fresh produce for cocktail recipes! Cheers!

5. Milk Glass
Ah milk glass, how we love thee. Milk glass made its big resurgence a few years ago and the trend has definitely stuck around. We think because it is a modern, white look – that is always looks good in decor and can be used in a multitude of ways. We love the idea of using old milk glass pieces as herb planters – puts a fun modern twist on it!

6. Modern Farmhouse
Mixing farmhouse, primitive or rustic pieces with modern elements and furniture is a trend that is here to stay. The contrast offers an interesting space while the farmhouse tables keeps it warm and the sleek chairs keep it modern. We love the look.

We hope these six trends tickled your fancy as much as ours. We enjoyed sharing them with you! Find the pieces pictured above in the shop this weekend – plus lots more!

Creative Ideas for Vintage Chairs

EVOchair1

chairinspireDecorating with vintage pieces can sometimes be a challenge. You want to incorporate a particular look, but you aren’t sure how to get it. Or you want to use a vintage piece – but you aren’t show how to use it.

We rounded up a few fabulous ideas from Pinterest for how to incorporate vintage chairs into your home. Here are our favorites:

1. Use different colors, sizes & styles of chairs at your dining room table.
We just love this look. It is eclectic but if the chairs are selected properly and with a creative eye, it creates an eye-popping look and an interesting focal point.

2. Reupholstering a piece that looks dated.
Sometimes what makes a vintage piece look “old” or “outdated” is just the worn out fabric or no-longer-stylish print. Recovering or reupholstering a dated piece in a modern fabric gives it a fresh new look fit for any stylish home. We love a floral or stripe print fabric!

3. Fluffing up your piece with coordinating pillows.
We have a whole blog post about how pillows can give a room new life, read it here.

4. Using a vintage armchair in an unexpected way.
Like as a desk chair, or as an accent to to a display of wall art – especially if the colors coordinate.

We hope you found some inspiration from our ideas – for more photos of chairs we have in the store click here and for more inspiration on how to use them in your home, click here.

We are open Saturday 10am-6pm & Sunday 11am-5pm, we hope to see you this weekend!

5 Great Ideas for Dressers & Armoires

By

Jan 24, 2014 antique, DIY, vintage , , , , 0 Comments

dresserideas1A popular trend in vintage decor is finding new ways to use furniture. From repurposing pieces to using furniture in creative ways – we are seeing some truly unique and innovative ideas. Armoires and dressers are among the most utilitarian pieces of furniture. They offer storage and tons of options with drawers, doors and more. Here are five creative ways to use dressers and armoires in your home!

1. Use an armoire as an office.
Small spaces are  usually the biggest challenge here in Alexandria – maximizing every inch of space is so important. Transforming an armoire into a concealable office is a great way to get a clean workspace that doesn’t require a whole room.

2. In the bathroom as a vanity or sink.
We’ve seen this done before and LOVE the idea. It harkens back to the days of wash basins and gives a lovely peronal touch to a bathroom. Not to mention a truly unique way to get a custom look on a budget!

3. A dresser in your closet.
This is an idea that surprised us. Closets can be a messy place and difficult to organize, especially in the older, smaller homes common in Alexandria. Using a dresser in the closet can help utilize some of that extra space. It can also make a smaller room feel larger if you take the closet door off and place the dresser inside.

4. Use a dresser in the kitchen – yes in the kitchen!
We love this innovative idea – using a dresser in a kitchen as an island! By simply adding a marble top and few extra fixtures, you can give a beautiful vintage dresser a new home in an unexpected place.

5. Repurpose a dresser for a new use, like a wine rack.
With a little elbow grease and some imagination, a dresser can easily be repurposed into a wine rack! What a great way to give an old piece of furniture a new life.

Now, take a look at the fabulous dressers and armoires available in the shop this week! Perfect for all of these ideas!

On Trend: Mixing Metals

By

Jan 10, 2014 , , , , 0 Comments

mixingmetals

Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other is gold and copper and bronze and brass! Mixing metals is a hot trend in home decor right now. Above are several great examples of mixing metal furniture and accessories we found on Pinterest. Switching out a few small accessories can make a big impact – but you can also make a state mixing larger pieces, like metal chairs and a wood dining table.

We love the idea of gold and brass frames mixed with small silver accessories for a little change. Or a chic gold vase inside an industrial steel basket. Mixing metals keeps things interesting!

Mixing metals adds a richness to your interior. We love that the “matchy-matchy” trends of yore are out the window. It is so much more exciting to see many different textures and layers in home decor. Metals can also be mixed with other non-metal accessories – like wood and linen. For example, metal dining chairs and a wood dining table or a rich wood dresser with a gold mirror, a silver tray and copper candlesticks.

We hope you are feeling inspired to try something new with your home decor. Shop Evolution Home for great deals on chic pieces! Check even more inspiring ideas on our Pinterest board!
